When I lived in the Peggys Cove region, where its coastal barrens, the wind couldn't be escaped and then it was cold! My recommendation if you plan to retire here and like to get outdoors in the winter (without heading south) is to find a area like Advocate Harbour which has the wooded trails and the beach areas. But then living in a place like Advocate Habour, that is easly done as both environments are on the doorstep! Advocate Harbour is on the Bay of Fundy. ![]() ![]() So on calm days I head for the beaches and open areas and windy days into the woods, where there is no wind. Nova Scotia is great to get out in the winter as it has a lot of clear days, but also a lot of windy days. The temperatures are milder and regardless of the damp you don't have to put on so much clothing that you look like the Michelin man every trip outside in the winter. If I dressed here on our coldest days like I did in Winnipeg on the average winter day while outdoors I would be roasting, and definitely not feeling damp. I have lived from one coast of Canada to the other, growing up on Vancouver Island and working in some cold places in between like North Bay, Winnipeg and Cold Lake and now semi retired in Nova Scotia. Hi, it really depends on what you are looking for out of winter. But, hang in there, because our falls are glorious most years and get better and better right into November-the colors are amazing and the temperatures are usually consistently enjoyable when it is easy to travel, do photography and just be outdoors. Often in recent years our winters turn into wet, cold, and dreary so-called springs that seem to sometimes last until June when it is called summer (at least after the fog goes!). I once lived in Edmonton for 6 years and got to enjoy the very cold, dry (and consistent) weather-you pretty knew what winter was going to be like as opposed to living in Nova Scotia where every winter day can be a new experience-it is all things here, sometimes within a 24 hour period-cold, windy, foggy, damp, wet, and cold, damp, windy and wet all over again! Can make winter seem very long and tiresome at times-this winter has been what we call a real winter-constant cold and snowstorms but good for skiing, skating and enjoying winter outdoors if that is your thing. ![]()
